Athlete's foot
Athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a common fungal infection that usually starts between the toes. It is caused by fungi called dermatophytes that thrive in warm, damp environments like sweaty shoes, locker rooms, and public showers.
Common Symptoms
You might notice the following signs on one or both feet:
Skin changes: Scaly, peeling, or cracked skin, particularly between the toes or on the soles.
Irritation: Intense itching, stinging, or burning sensations, often worsening after you remove your shoes.
Appearance: Red, purple, or gray inflamed skin (depending on skin tone) or white, "soggy" patches between toes.
Blisters: Small, fluid-filled bumps that may itch or be painful.
How It Spreads
Athlete's foot is contagious and spreads through:
Direct contact with an infected person.
Contaminated surfaces such as towels, floors in public showers, or shared shoes.
Self-spread to other body parts, like the groin (jock itch) or hands, if you touch the infected area and then touch elsewhere.
Treatment Options
Most mild cases can be managed at home using over-the-counter (OTC) products:
OTC Antifungals: Creams, sprays, or powders containing ingredients like tolnaftate or clotrimazole, available at retailers like CVS or Walgreens.
Usage Tip: Continue applying the medication for at least one week after the rash appears to be gone to prevent it from returning.
Prescription: If OTC treatments don't work after two weeks, a doctor may prescribe stronger topical or oral medications.
Prevention and Care
Keep feet dry: Dry thoroughly after washing, especially between the toes.
Change socks daily: Use moisture-wicking materials like 100% cotton.
Rotate shoes: Give footwear 24 hours to dry out before wearing them again.
Wear protection: Use waterproof sandals or flip-flops in public pools and locker rooms.
When to see a doctor: Consult a healthcare professional if the rash doesn't improve within two weeks, or immediately if you have diabetes or see signs of a bacterial infection like pus or fever.
